Scare Crow (Crow’s Row #2) by Julie Hockley

PUBLICATION: March 25, 2014

PUBLISHER: iUniverse, Incorporated

Nineteen-year-old Emily Sheppard is losing her sanity. Ever since her mob king boyfriend, Cameron Hillard, abandoned her for her own good, Emmy has been attempting to move on with her charmed college student life as if nothing happened. Now rejected from the underworld and left grieving over Cameron’s alleged death, Emmy realizes she belongs nowhere. Worse yet, she is now keeping a dangerous secret.

After just a short time with Emily, Cameron has lost control over his world. As he miserably attempts to return to what is left of his life and unravel the mess he has made of the underworld, Emily’s hate turns to desperation. She needs to kill the kingpins responsible for Cameron’s death before they come looking for her. As Cameron secretly observes Emily, he has no idea of the danger he has placed her in—or that it may already be too late for him to save her.

Scare Crow is a tale of revenge, terror, and love as Emmy and Cameron embark on separate journeys to face enemies, correct past mistakes, and find their way to their destinies.

I first fell in love with Crow’s Row when I read it back in 2012. It was an awesome story that I loved pretty much instantly. Needless to say, I was super anxious, waiting for the sequel to come out. When I heard it was releasing in March, I was over the moon ecstatic. Finally I would get to see more of Emily and Cameron.

Scare Crow pretty much picks up right were the previous book left off. Emily is still broken up over Cameron’s death…vowing to make those responsible pay. And Cameron is still very much alive, trying to get his organization under control.

I liked seeing her Emily changed…how Cameron’s ‘death’ changed her and how she coped with that. I could totally understand her wanting to make the people she thought was responsible pay for what happened to Cameron, but her ideas were not very realistic. That was pretty much expected though, since she has no experience in killing or doing anything underhanded and dirty. But I was rooting for her the entire time.

I liked the story, but not as much as I was hoping I was going to and not as much as I loved Crow’s Row. This is the part were it might get a little bit spoilerish if you like to go into the book without knowing too many facts. So STOP here!

I did not like that I didn’t get to see Cameron and Emily share any kind of scene until well past the first half of the story. That was a little disappointing. And the ending? It was…okay. It wasn’t the ending I was hoping for. It still left me with some questions, which I was not expecting at all. But I just recently found out that there will be a THIRD BOOK!! So I am placated…at least until it comes out.

RATING: 3-3½ out of 5.

**I received this book on behalf of the Author and Know Your Books Off in exchange for nothing, except my honest opinion. Thank you.**

Expected Publication: December 5, 2013

Two paths.
Two completely different roads.
Each one standing before me.
Each one holding a different destiny.

In life you're just supposed to choose one path.
In life you're not given the chance at choosing one specific future.

Until now.
Until me.

Why am I different? I don't know. But I'm going to see those roads and walk down each one. When it's over I'll know which one to choose because I'll know my - options.

This book sounds really interesting and Abbi Glines knows how to write a good book. December is not too far away thankfully.

What book are you waiting for?

Crow's Row by Julie Hockley

Emily Sheppard is a freshman at Callister University in New York. She decides to enjoy her summer vacation by herself. She spends her days working at the university library and in the evenings/nights she finds comfort in running. Emily comes from a wealthy family, but she does not want anything to do with her parents or their money. That is why she chose to live in a not so great area of town and go to a small lesser known university. She wants to learn how to make it on her own.

In the course of one of her many jogs through the cemetery where her brother Bill is buried, she happens to witness someone being murdered. She recognizes Cameron (having met him previously when his dog Meatball attacked her while she was jogging) before everything goes black. She wakes up in an unfamiliar place and realizes she has been taken against her will. Cameron tells her that he is just protecting her and it is not safe for her to go back to her home yet. So Emily is forced to live with him and his gang until he decides she is free to go…if he decides she is free to go...

During the course of her stay, Emily finds out that Cameron is a 26 year old crime boss. Even though his morals are in question and he seems to be hiding something, Emily finds herself falling for him. Cameron feels something for Emily as well, but he tries to fight it, fearing that it can only end in heartbreak.

“You’re beautiful, Emmy. Why can’t you see that? I didn’t know how to answer that. Cameron hadn’t been there when kids were trying to outdo each other on finding new nicknames for me or when they were taking bets in high school on whether I had red hair, all over. He took a breath, reached over and swept a lingering hair away from my face. For me, there’s no one else but you. A tear escaped the corner of my eye and slid down the side of my nose. Then why won’t you kiss me? His eyes were piercing. Do you know how hard this is for me? I want to kiss you. I want to wrap my arms around you, never let you go.”  -Julie Hockley, Crow’s Row

Is it an emotional read? Yes
Will it make you cry? Yes.
Is it worth it? OMG Totally!

Crow’s Row is one of the best books I have read this year; my only regret was that I didn’t discover it sooner.  The characters were in-depth, and there is enough suspense and twists in the story that keep it interesting. I loved this book. I felt like I was on a rollercoaster ride filled with highs and lows and I didn’t want to get off. The ending took me by surprise and all I wanted to know was where is the sequel???  Unfortunately Scare Crow, the sequel to Crow’s Row is slated to come out next year, so I will have to develop a little patience.

Rating: 4 ½ out of 5.
