Quickie Review: Lock Every Door by Riley Sager

Publication: July 2, 2019
Publisher: Dutton/Penguin Group
Source: Publisher

Synopsis:

No visitors. No nights spent away from the apartment. No disturbing the other residents, all of whom are rich or famous or both. These are the only rules for Jules Larsen's new job as an apartment sitter at the Bartholomew, one of Manhattan's most high-profile and mysterious buildings. Recently heartbroken and just plain broke, Jules is taken in by the splendor of her surroundings and accepts the terms, ready to leave her past life behind.

As she gets to know the residents and staff of the Bartholomew, Jules finds herself drawn to fellow apartment sitter Ingrid, who comfortingly, disturbingly reminds her of the sister she lost eight years ago. When Ingrid confides that the Bartholomew is not what it seems and the dark history hidden beneath its gleaming facade is starting to frighten her, Jules brushes it off as a harmless ghost story—until the next day, when Ingrid disappears.

Searching for the truth about Ingrid's disappearance, Jules digs deeper into the Bartholomew's dark past and into the secrets kept within its walls. Her discovery that Ingrid is not the first apartment sitter to go missing at the Bartholomew pits Jules against the clock as she races to unmask a killer, expose the building's hidden past, and escape the Bartholomew before her temporary status becomes permanent.

******

I would say that this was more of a mysterious story than suspenseful. I thought that Jules’s, the main character was good. I didn’t really connect with her, but she was likable, spunky, and I found it easy to want her to have a better life. She has gone through some tough times in her life and she is pretty determined to keep going and not give up.
Jules was however a little naive at times. Not to mention, she put herself in dangerous situations when I felt like she didn't have to. And even though I know she did some of the things because of her sister Jane, but to me that wasn't a big enough reason to jeopardize her own safety.

The story didn't pick up that much for me until 70% or so. I'm satisfied with how the book ended, but I wish there had been more red herrings/twists to the story.
Lock Every Door is a well written and entertaining story that you should try if you are a fan of Riley Sager or mysteries in general. He always comes up with interesting concepts and characters.

TOP TEN MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK RELEASES FOR THE FIRST HALF OF 2019!

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly Meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.  This week’s meme is: Most Anticipated Book Releases for the First Half of 2019!

I feel like there are so many awesome sounding books coming out this year; more so than 2018 IMO. It was hard to pick and choose which books I am looking forward to the most, but I think I did it. Take a look at let me know what you think!

P.S. Clicking the book covers will take you to Goodreads.

The Winter of the Witch by Katherine Arden – Releases January 8, 2019.

Yeah, I know this book releases in just a few hours, but I am still looking forward to it. I didn’t like the second book as much as I did the first one, but I am excited to see where Vasya ends up on her journey.

As Long as We Both Shall Live by JoAnn Chaney – Releases January 15, 2019.

This book piqued my interest as soon as I saw it. The cover looks great and this sounds really suspenseful.

We Shouldn’t by Vi Keeland – Releases January 21, 2019.

I’m a sucker for a cute romance and I love Vi Keeland. This one sounds cute and funny.

The Deceivers (The Valhalla Academy #1) by Kristen Simmons – Releases February 5, 2019.

Pretty Little Liars meets Ocean’s 11? Ummm Yes Please! It’s been a while since I’ve read a good con artist story. Fingers crossed it meets my expectations.

99 Percent Mine by Sally Thorne – Releases January 29, 2019.

As soon as I see the words romantic comedy, I am sold. 99 Percent Mine sounds totally cute and swoon worthy.

Sherwood by Meagan Spooner – Releases on March 19, 2019.

I love Robin Hood. And I can appreciate a good spin on a classic tale. Sherwood looks like it would be a lot of fun to read.

Call Me Evie by J.P. Pomare – Releases March 5, 2019.

I am all for a good psychological thriller and this one sounds like it’s right up my alley.

Meet Cute by Helena Hunting – Releases April 9, 2019.

Here is yet another romantic comedy on my list. There seem to be a lot of good ones coming out. Meet Cute sounds totally adorable! I cannot wait to check it out.

I Owe You One by Sophie Kinsella – Releases February 5, 2019.

Sophie Kinsella’s books are usually bright and fun romances. I enjoyed her Shopaholic series, and I hope that I like this one just as well.

Lock Every Door by Riley Sager – Releases July 2, 2019.

So technically this book is slightly passed the first half of 2019, but it’s so close I am putting on the list anyways. I love Riley Sager. Final Girls was one of my favorite reads and I crossing my fingers that this book is just as good if not better. So excited for it!

The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager

Publication: July 3, 2018
Publisher: Dutton
Source: Publisher / Bought my own copy

Two Truths and a Lie. The girls played it all the time in their tiny cabin at Camp Nightingale. Vivian, Natalie, Allison, and first-time camper Emma Davis, the youngest of the group. The games ended when Emma sleepily watched the others sneak out of the cabin in the dead of night. The last she—or anyone—saw of them was Vivian closing the cabin door behind her, hushing Emma with a finger pressed to her lips.

Now a rising star in the New York art scene, Emma turns her past into paintings—massive canvases filled with dark leaves and gnarled branches that cover ghostly shapes in white dresses. The paintings catch the attention of Francesca Harris-White, the socialite and wealthy owner of Camp Nightingale. When Francesca implores her to return to the newly reopened camp as a painting instructor, Emma sees an opportunity to try to find out what really happened to her friends.

Yet it's immediately clear that all is not right at Camp Nightingale. Already haunted by memories from fifteen years ago, Emma discovers a security camera pointed directly at her cabin, mounting mistrust from Francesca and, most disturbing of all, cryptic clues Vivian left behind about the camp's twisted origins. As she digs deeper, Emma finds herself sorting through lies from the past while facing threats from both man and nature in the present.

And the closer she gets to the truth about Camp Nightingale, the more she realizes it may come at a deadly price.

******

At 13, Emma Davis went to summer camp (Camp Nightingale) for the first time. Arriving late, she had to share a cabin with three older girls, Natalie, Allison, and the queen bee…Vivian. They all get along and despite the age difference, Vivian sort of takes Emma under her wing and decides to be her “big sister” for the summer. She even learns how to play Vivian’s favorite game, Two Truths and a Lie. Things aren’t always fun and games at camp however and as the days pass by, deception, lies, and tension begin to run high. Then one night after a heated confrontation, Vivian, Allison and Natalie sneak out of their cabin and are never seen again.

Fast-forward 15 years later and Emma is a successful painter. She has put the past behind her, or at least she’s tried to. That past seems to catch up with her when Franny, the owner of Camp Nightingale invites Emma back to camp. This time as a painting instructor. Against what I think is sound judgement, Emma takes Franny up on her offer and attempts to face her “demons”.

Once Emma arrives, she discovers that things aren’t as they seem at Camp Nightingale. The more she tries to uncover what happened 15 years ago, the more creepy things become. And pretty soon, it looks like someone is holding a grudge and is out to get Emma. Or is she the one lying? It becomes imperative that she find out the truth before it’s too late and something bad happens...again.

I enjoyed reading Final Girls last year and when I saw that The Last Time I Lied was coming out, I was super excited to read it. It did not disappoint. It was entertaining, I was never once bored, and there was always something going on. Riley Sager knows how to create interesting characters and throw them into unique and sometimes creepy situations to draw the reader in and get them hooked. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves a good suspenseful thriller. The Last Time I Lied is the perfect summertime read.
