Deceived by Julie Anne Lindsey

Publication: September 18, 2013

Publisher: Merit Press

When Elle's father, a single parent and a big shot in corporate insurance, moves her to yet another boarding school for senior year, Elle is disgusted when nothing changes. Her night terrors don't go away, and, soon, despite her father's caring calls and visits, Elle starts to believe she's losing her mind. She knows she's being followed; a ribbon is tied around her doorknob, and there are those cigarette butts that keep turning up on the doormat, in violation of a strict smoking ban on campus. Then there's Bryan, an intriguing boy Elle meets at a flea market and later finds out is a student at her school. Yet on campus, he pretends he doesn't recognize her - until the day he divulges just how much danger she's in. In her search for an answer to all the madness, Elle unravels the truth about her dad's real identity, why someone has lied to her all her life, and the terrifying truth that she may be the only one who can save her from the one who's following her now.

Because Elle’s father works and because he travels a lot, Elle is put into a boarding school. She is hoping that this is the final one before she heads off to college. Despite the change in scenery, her nightmares continue.

It’s not long before she finds a reason to become paranoid that someone is out there watching her. As soon as she and her roommate discover cigarette butts on the doormat, her curiosity is peaked and she wonders who they really belong to.

With horrible monsters invading her, Elle has programmed herself to go without sleep as much as possible; mainly by using adrenaline and caffeine.

There is some romance in the story, but it didn’t seem to play a major part in the story. I’m not sure why, but I have not been feeling book romances lately. IDK.

Deceived was an exciting read that kept me interested and on the edge of me seat throughout the whole book.
I thought that the author did a nice job of planting little clues throughout the book in order to raise suspicions and get the readers imagination going. The pace of the story was a little slow at first, but sticking with it, definitely paid off. The suspense/mystery was nicely done and had me constantly guessing.

RATING: 3 ½ out of 5.

** I received this book on behalf of the publisher in exchange for nothing, but my honest opinion. Thank you. **

Escape from Eden by Elisa Nader

“But the Reverend didn’t want control of just our hearts. He wanted our minds as well.”
-Elisa Nader, Escape from Eden

I’m sitting here and I am not even sure what I want to say about this book…other than it left me with such feelings!

I have always had this mild curiosity when it came to cults. It’s...for lack of a better word, fascinating how someone can manipulate a group of people into believing something; even things that do not make much sense.

“How could anyone in Edenton believe anything the Reverend told them? You believe the people you love and trust-blind love is still love.”
-Elisa Nader, Escape from Eden

Mia lives in Edenton with her mother and younger brother. They have been living there for the past six years. And even though her mom seems content to abide by the rules and live out the rest of her life there, Mia is feeling restless. She wants more from her life. She still remembers her past life before she came to Edenton, and she isn’t satisfied with how things are run at the compound.  I loved Mia. I thought she was strong and fearless. She took some chances, and even though she may have been scared, she knew she had to do whatever it took to help save her family.

There is a little bit of romance that happens between Mia and Gabriel, the seventeen year old who recently moved into the compound with his parents. Hoping that it would supposedly help heal them from past family trauma/issues.  Gabriel had such a sad backstory. I felt so bad for him. Despite all that he has gone through, he was incredibly sarcastic and sweet.

The Reverend Elias Eden and Thaddeus are a pair of sick and twisted SOB’s. I was expected something nefarious, but I was still surprised by what went on in that compound and the true extent of it. I wanted to hurt them badly and make them suffer before I was even halfway through the book!

The first chapter got me hooked and I couldn’t stop reading till it was over. This is definitely one story that stayed with me long after I read the last page. Escaping Eden was a fascinating and enjoyable story filled with enough action and suspense to keep me entertained throughout the whole book.
