Release Date: October 13th 2015

Rate: 4 out of 5 Stars.

Synopsis:

The sequel to TRUST ME, I’M LYING

Staying out of trouble isn’t possible for Julep Dupree. She has managed not to get kicked out of her private school, even though everyone knows she’s responsible for taking down a human-trafficking mob boss—and getting St. Agatha’s golden-boy Tyler killed in the process. Running cons holds her guilty conscience at bay, but unfortunately, someone wants Julep to pay for her mistakes . . . with her life.

Against her better judgment, Julep takes a shady case that requires her to infiltrate a secretive organization that her long-gone mother and the enigmatic blue fairy may be connected to. Her best friend, Sam, isn’t around to stop her, and Dani, her one true confidante, happens to be a nineteen-year-old mob enforcer whose moral compass is as questionable as Julep’s. But there’s not much time to worry about right and wrong—or to save your falling heart—when there’s a contract on your head.

Murders, heists, secrets and lies, hit men and hidden identities . . . If Julep doesn’t watch her back, it’s her funeral. No lie.

I’ve always had a thing for movies and books now involving con, heists, etc… That is what first caught my attention with this series last year. Trust Me, I’m Trouble is the sequel to Trust Me, I’m Trouble. Julep is dealing with the aftermath of everything that happened in the first book, while still attempting to pull of cons.

Julep is witty, smart, crafty, and has a multitude of skills at her disposal. Plus it seems like she has grown up a little more since the first book. Her choices so far may have been a little questionable, but she isn’t going to let them stop her from doing what she does best. A gifted manipulator, she has a way with words and getting people to say or do what she needs them to.

I really liked the mystery portion of the story. It wasn’t predictable and there were plenty of twists and surprises to keep me interested in reading. I ended up enjoying this book a little bit more than I did the first one. The writing and pace of the story was done well….I never got bored with the storyline and I liked how everything wasn’t easy to guess.

If you like stories involving schemes, con artists, and some mystery thrown into the mix, then I would recommend this series to you. And if you have read the first book you need to pick up this one when it releases on Tuesday! To find out more about Mary Elizabeth Summer and the previous books in this series, see below. The Fear Trials (The Murder Complex 0.5) by Lindsay Cummings Blog Tour

The Fear Trials (The Murder Complex 0.5)
Publisher: HarperTeen Impulse
Release Date: May 27th 2014
Rate: 3½ out of 5.

Synopsis:

Meadow Woodson has been trained to survive. This is a prequel to The Murder Complex, by Lindsay Cummings, and it is set in a blood-soaked world where the murder rate is higher than the birth rate. For fans of Moira Young's Dust Lands series, La Femme Nikita, and the movie Hanna.

Meadow Woodson's father calls it The Fear Trials, and it is a rite of passage in their family. Meadow is up against her brother Koi. The Fear Trials will both harden her and make her brave. If Meadow wins, she will get a weapon of her own and the right to leave the Woodsons' houseboat without her father or mother at her side. Set in the violent, complex, and mysterious world of The Murder Complex, and introducing Meadow Woodson—a teenage girl trained to survive no matter what the cost—and her family, who are together for the last time on their houseboat in the Florida Everglades.

The Fear Trials reminded me a little of Divergent (because of the dystopian world setting) and the movie The Purge (well because of the murder). The world that Meadow Woodson lives in is a bleak and complex one. One where it’s not safe to venture out alone, especially once the sun sets.

Living on a houseboat with her parents, older brother and younger sister, Meadow has been training to survive. Taught by her father, everyday is a lesson in survival. She needs to be tough, confident, and most importantly she needs to be able to kill someone if necessary. It’s either kill or be killed. No one’s life is guaranteed and planning for the future is a little too optimistic because you never really know if you will make it to see another day.

This novella is the prequel to The Murder Complex, which releases Tuesday, June 10, 2014. If you have been considering checking out TMC, I would definitely recommend reading The Fear Trials first. I was able to read it in one sitting. It’s unique, intense and highly entertaining.

RATING: 3½ out of 5.
