The Accused by Jana DeLeon

Paperback Publication: July 23, 2013. Ebook: August 1, 2013

Publisher: Harlequin

USA TODAY bestselling author Jana DeLeon has a new trilogy-Mystere Parish: Family Inheritance  After working as a cop in New Orleans, Carter Trahan is back in Mystere Parish, where his latest assignment seems like a joke: making sure Alaina LeBeau lives in her childhood home for two weeks to comply with her mother's will. But soon the sexy sheriff isn't laughing. Someone-or something-is stalking the beautiful defense lawyer, turning her once-grand mansion into a house of horrors.

But as he searches for the truth, Carter must face ghosts of his own past lurking in the bayou. Most troubling of all is his unprofessional attraction to the woman he's protecting, as Alaina's allure haunts him as no specter ever could....

Alaina LeBeau is a lawyer. Or at least she was one until she quits her job at a big law firm when her boss decides to make her undeserving, but well connected co-worker partner instead of herself. Feeling frustrated and needing time to figure out her next game plan, she goes to stay at her mother’s mansion for two whole weeks in order to qualify for her mom’s inheritance. That’s when things get interesting and Alaina finds out that this won’t be as easy and relaxing as it sounds…

What I liked:
I really enjoyed the story line on this one. It had just the right amount of suspense to keep me guessing. And with all of the different character, I wasn’t sure at first who the bad guy was.

What I did not:
Some parts were a little predictable.  The romance was okay. It didn’t really grab me for some reason.

Final Thoughts:
The Accused was an enjoyable and entertaining book. Just beware that this is the first in a trilogy. If you are one of those readers that like everything completely resolved by the end of the novel, then you will be disappointed. If you are a fan of books with plenty of mystery, ghosts, and a dash of romance, then this book will be right up your alley.  The second book in this series, The Betrayed which involves Alaina’s younger sister, is expected to release on August 20th 2013.

Rating: 3½ out of 5.

**I received this book on behalf of Harlequin in exchange for nothing, but my honest opinion. Thank you.**
