“I always knew I would fall in love with you,” he said softly, “but you were never supposed to love me back.”
-Priscilla Glenn, Back to You
From Goodreads:
When Lauren Monroe first laid eyes on Michael
Delaney back in high school, she had every reason to stay away from him; within
minutes of their first encounter, his volatile actions confirmed his notorious
reputation. But Lauren saw something in him that caused her to question his
bad-boy persona, and against her better judgment, she took a chance. She had no
way of knowing that the unlikely friendship they formed would become so
important to her.
Or that it would end so painfully.
Eight years later, when Lauren begins her new job at Learn and Grow Day Care, Michael is the last person she expects to see. Refusing to revisit the hurt and confusion of their past, Lauren vows to keep her distance from him. But staying away from Michael proves to be more difficult than she thought, despite her lingering grief and her instincts for self-preservation.
As Lauren and Michael recall the friendship that changed them forever and the events that tore them apart, will they finally be able to heal? Or will the ghosts of Michael’s past prove to be too much to overcome?

*************************************
Lauren
and Michael became friends in high school. Michael was the ‘bad boy’ in high
school. Life was not made easy for him, he had a difficult childhood. I felt
for Michael. Growing up the way he did…getting blamed for things that were not
his fault. I wished someone would have stopped and showered him with some hugs
and lots of love. Lauren was considered
the good girl who was taken with him.
She was
able to see in Michael what others did not. She saw past his ‘attitude’ and
issues, and realized that there was something good underneath. He needed love
and the right person to show him that he was worthy of receiving it.
Their friendship
seemed like an odd match to their friends, but that did not stop them from continuing
it. But one day that the special friendship that Lauren and Michael share ends badly
and abruptly.
Eight
years later, they come back into each other’s lives. Even though they have not
seen in each in so long, there is still a connection between them.
Showcasing
POV’s from both Lauren and Michael, the story flips from past to present as the
reader sees what happened to make them loose touch for 8 years and how that has
affected their life in the present. I thought that the dual POV’s was a nice
bonus. I always like to read what the other main character in a story is
thinking versus just the one.
Their
emotional and drama filled journey made for an engaging read, that I enjoyed. Even though I was cheering for Michael and
Lauren to make it, I still felt like Michael could have tried harder when it
came to him letting Lauren know how he felt. Apart from that I liked the writing.
I became invested in these characters and how their story was going to play
out.
