Wren Caswell is average. Ranked in the middle of her class at Sacred Heart, she’s not popular, but not a social misfit. Wren is the quiet, “good” girl who's always done what she's supposed to—only now in her junior year, this passive strategy is backfiring. She wants to change, but doesn’t know how.

Grayson Barrett was the king of St. Gabe’s. Star of the lacrosse team, top of his class, on a fast track to a brilliant future—until he was expelled for being a “term paper pimp.” Now Gray is in a downward spiral and needs to change, but doesn’t know how.

One fateful night their paths cross when Wren, working at her family’s Arthurian-themed catering hall, performs the Heimlich on Gray as he chokes on a cocktail weenie, saving his life literally and figuratively. What follows is the complicated, awkward, hilarious, and tender tale of two teens shedding their pasts, figuring out who they are—and falling in love.

Wren was a very likeable character right off the bat.  She is just a normal teen in high school; worrying about getting a prom date, friends, college, and all that fun stuff.  She wasn’t obnoxious or stupid. That was the main reason that I liked her, because she was like your average teen, with the same issues real teens go through.

Her love interest, Grayson, was so-so to me. I don’t think that I was completely sold on him as I would have liked. He is popular, likes attention, and way over confident.  And I didn’t really see why Wren was so drawn to him.

Their love developed rather instantly, which I am not always a big fan of. But apart from that, they did seem to have a nice connection. And there were some incredibly sweet moments between these two that I really enjoyed reading.

It has been a while since I have read a regular YA contemporary romance, so this was a nice change of pace from the mystery/thriller books I have been reading lately.

The cover and the premise of The Promise of Amazing, caught my attention as soon as I spotted it on Goodreads. It looked totally adorable.  And while it may seem like your same typical boy meets girl YA contemporary love story, I still enjoyed the story as a whole.

RATING: 3½ OUT OF 5.

  2. The cover and title drew me to this book too. I have a feeling it won't be a favorite of mine, but I've been reading dark contemporary. I think I need a change of pace, aha. This certainly sounds like a good enough read. At least it was enjoyable, even if it wasn't great.
