Motorcycle Man by Kristen Ashley

Motorcycle Man Cover Image

Synopsis:

Stuck in a colorless world, Tyra Masters decides to chuck her old life and starts searching for something. She doesn't know what it is until she meets her dream man. The goateed, tattooed, muscled, gravelly voiced motorcycle man who plies her with tequila and gives her the best sex of her life. But she knows it isn't the tequila and sex talking. He’s it. He’s who she’s been daydreaming about since she could remember.
Until he makes it clear she isn’t who he’s looking for.
Tyra slinks away from his bed, humiliated. The problem is, he’s her new boss. She just may or may not have forgotten to tell him that part.
Kane “Tack” Allen has a rule. He doesn’t employ someone he’s slept with. And he lets Tyra know that in his motorcycle man way. Tyra fights for her job and wins it using sass and a technicality. Tack challenges her that if she hits his bed one more time, she loses her job.
Tyra is determined to keep her job and keep away from Tack. But she makes a big mistake. During their head-to-heads, she lets it all hang out and shows Tack she is who he’s looking for. And Tack has had a good woman slip through his fingers, he’s not about to let that happen again.
Although Tack colors Tyra’s world with a vibrancy that’s blinding, being with him means she has to live in his Motorcycle Club world. Full on, no holds barred. And since Tack’s world, not to mention Tack, is a little scary, Tyra isn’t so sure.
It's Tack's job to convince her.

******************************************************

I always seem to read Kristen Ashley’s books out of order for some reason.  I ended up reading Motorcycle Man, the fourth book in The Dream Man Series first and I absolutely loved it! Tack who showed up in the first book, Mystery Man, gets his own story now. In Motorcycle Man he meets Trya Masters, a feisty woman that I instantly liked. Out of all the KA books I have read, Tack and Tyra are one of my favorite couples.

“To be fair, baby, I’m givin’ you a warning,” he said quietly. “Let me go,” I demanded just as quietly, mostly because I was freaking out. “I want somethin’, I get it.” “Let me go,” I repeated. “Only once, I didn't  That shit ain't happenin’ to me again.” “Tack –” “ You've been warned, Red,” he whispered and I watched his eyes drop to my mouth. I held my breath and put pressure on his hand at my head. I was concentrating on both of these things so hard, I lost track of his other hand until I felt his fingers against my cheek. His thumb was sliding along my lower lip before I could do anything to stop it. Then he released me, turned and without another word or look, he sauntered out the door.

What I liked:
Tack is a sexy and stubborn alpha male with tattoos and a goatee. Once he knows what he wants, he isn't afraid of going after it. Apart from running a custom bike shop, he is an awesome dad to two kids. If biker dudes aren't normally your thing, Tack will definitely change your mind.

Tyra is cute. She is sassy and determined. I don’t want to spoil the story too much for those who have not read it yet, but there is this one scene when something goes down with Tabby, Tack’s daughter and Tyra jumps to defend Tabby without so much as even an afterthought. I thought that was awesome. Tyra comes up with her own way of helping/defending her which happens to be funny and also one of my favorite scenes in the book.

Final thoughts:
Kristen Ashley has the ability to write fun and sexy romances with a good attention to detail and solid characters that the reader cannot help but care about. Her books were one of the first few contemporary romances that I had read and I am so glad that I did. One of the biggest things I like is that the majority of her stories end with a great HEA. I love that. I am looking forward to Shy and Tabby’s story in Own the Wind which is supposed to release on April 2, 2013.

Feature & Follow (1)

Feature and Follow Image

This is my first time participating in Feature & Follow, which by the way is sponsored by Parajunkee's View and Alison Can Read. Basically you visit, comment, make new friends, and follow as many blogs as you can/want.
Make sure to leave  comment when you do, so I know to follow back.
If you want to participate, the rules and this weeks Featured Blogger can be found on Parajunkee’s blog.

 This weeks Question:

Q: Tell us about the most emotional scene you’ve ever read in a book – and how did you react?

My Answer: I’ve read my fair share of emotional books, but none that made me super emotional…at least none that I can think of right away. But one book came to my mind first when I thought about this question. Read Me Dead by Emerald Barnes.

***SPOILER ALERT!***

* The scene were Alex realizes that Landon is dead was heartbreaking for me to read.  She was weighed down with this guilt because she believed his death was her fault. I cried and my heart felt for her. I didn't expect Landon would die and I did not want him to. I could not even read the funeral scene at one time, I had to keep coming back to it. Those chapters were emotional to me.

*What emotional book scenes stand out for you?

Midnight Exposure by Melinda Leigh

Midnight Exposure Cover Image

Synopsis:

Point, click, die.
When two hikers disappear, their hometown in Maine blames the blinding storms. But the truth is far more sinister. Unaware of the danger, tabloid photographer Jayne Sullivan follows an anonymous tip to find the most reclusive sculptor in the art world. Instead, she finds sexy handyman Reed Kimball—and a small town full of fatal secrets.
Five years ago, Reed buried his homicide detective career along with his wife. But when a hiker is found dead, the local police chief asks Reed for help. Why was a Celtic coin found under the body? And where is the second hiker? Avoiding the media, Reed doesn’t need a murder, a missing person, or a nosey photographer. Then Jayne is attacked, and her courage is his undoing.
Reed must risk everything to protect her - and find a cunning killer.

*******************************************************

I was in the mood for a a little romance\suspense action and I came across Midnight Exposure by Melinda Leigh. It had been sitting on my e-book shelf for about a week calling my name, so I decided to try it out.

This story begins with Jayne Sullivan attempting to track down an artist/sculptor who no one has seen by the name of R.S. Morgan for a tabloid paper she occasionally takes pictures for.

She ends up in the town of Huntsville. A small town where everyone knows each other.  She plans on exploring the town and striking up conversation with the locals to see if they know anything. While out, she notices something strange. Unsure of what it might be, she snaps a picture to look at later. No big deal. However, it isn't long before Jayne attracts some unwanted attention and her life is put in grave danger.
Especially when the person who sets their sights on Jayne, is not your run of the mill bad buy, but a person who practices magic in the old ways of the Celtic religion (a.k.a: A Druid).
This sleepy little town, is anything but…

“Someone in this perfect little town had a deep dark side. The well-kept houses, the Christmas lights, the wreaths, the picket fences, it all felt like a lie. Under the quaint small-town facade lurked something evil.”
-Melinda Leigh, Midnight Exposure

What I liked:
I liked that the mystery part of the story was not easy to figure out. I have to admit that I thought I had the bad guy figured out by the 5th or 6th chapter, but I was thrown for a loop and it turned out I was wrong.
This story kept me guessing, which I loved.

What I did not:
For some reason, I was just not sold on the romance aspect of the story. It seemed like the author was trying to portray this big connection/instant attraction between Jayne and Reed that I was not feeling. It felt like it was lacking something for me.

Final thoughts:
Midnight Exposure was a good story to get into. My attention was grabbed within the first chapter. The story flowed well. Something was always happening, I wanted to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next and who the stalker/murderer was.
To my surprise the story did not completely wrap up at the end. That killed me! Melinda Leigh left me on the edge of my seat, wondering what is going to occur next. Thankfully I do not have to wait very long because the second book, Midnight Sacrifice is supposed to be released on April 16, 2013.

AToMR Blog Tour: Why Can’t I Be You by Allie Larkin

 Why Can't I Be You - 72 dpi

Synopsis:
At one time or another, everyone has wished she could be someone else. Exploring this universal longing, Allie Larkin follows up the success of her debut novel, Stay, with a moving portrait of friendship and identity.
When Jenny Shaw hears someone shout “Jessie!” across a hotel lobby, she impulsively answers. All her life, Jenny has toed the line, but something propels her to seize the opportunity to become Jessie Morgan, a woman to whom she bears an uncanny resemblance. Lonely in her own life, Jenny is embraced by Jessie’s warm circle of friends—and finds unexpected romance. But when she delves into Jessie’s past, Jenny discovers a secret that spurs her to take another leap into the unknown.

*******************************************************

Who hasn't wanted to start over and have a fresh start? If by doing so you life would become better or worse? I know I have. In Allie Larkin's ‘Why Can't I be You,’ the main character, Jenny Shaw gets to do just that. I think that is what made this story so attractive to me. The concept of being someone else is very appealing.
I expected something a little light and breezy with possibly a little angst/emotional turmoil thrown in for good measure.  I was wonderfully surprised that what I got was a story that was more than that.
Jenny is having a tough time of things. Her boyfriend who she thought she was going to marry, leaves her for someone else. Jenny is feeling heartbroken, and a bit unfulfilled with both her personal and professional life. She feels alone and doesn’t know how to stand up for herself. So it is no wonder that when someone mistakenly calls her "Jessie” Jenny, without much thought, responds.
From  there she meets all of Jessie’s old high school friends. The more time she hangs out with them the deeper the hole she digs herself.
Even though Jenny might look similar to Jessie, I did question how long a person would really be able to pull something like that off.
I felt like Jenny had to have known that this charade could not last very long and in the end she would just end up getting hurt. I felt for her. Less then half-way through I was already crossing my fingers, hoping that everything worked out for Jenny by the end of the book. I can understand the allure of wanting to keep up the pretenses. Spending time with these people have helped her become more social and outgoing. She experiences first hand the benefits of having a group of people in your life that you care about and who care about you.

‘Why Can’t I Be You’ is an interesting story that deals with friendship, self-identity, family, and even a subtle romance. There is no insta-love going on here which is a plus for me. If women’s fiction is up your alley, then you might want to give this book a try. It’s definitely not your regular run of the mill chick-lit tale.

Top Ten Books I HAD To Buy…But Are Still Sitting On My Shelf Unread

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday, is about the “Top Ten Books I HAD To Buy…But Are Still Sitting On My Shelf Unread.”
As a reminder, Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish blog. So here is a list of some of the books I was dying to buy and have yet to read. This short list is just a tip of the iceberg for me when it comes to books I haven’t read…Anywho enough of my ramblings, check out my list!
(P.S. Clicking on the book covers will take you to Goodreads)

The Diviners by Libba Bray – I love Libba Bray’s writing. I think the Gemma Doyle series rocked and I was beyond ecstatic to get “The Diviners.”

I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella – I read the sample on this one and thought that it was super cute, so naturally I had to buy it.

The Bridge by Karen Kingsbury – When the holiday season was coming up last year, I was looking for something Christmasy to read and was looking forward to reading this one. But unfortunately the holiday came and went and now it is March and I have yet to tackle this one.

Fate by Elizabeth Reyes – After loving ‘Making You Mine,’ I was excited to grab ‘Fate’ as soon as it was released.

Reflected in You by Sylvia Day – Loved ‘Bared to You.’ I Pre-ordered ‘Reflected as soon as I possibly could, but I still have not had the chance to read it.

Sirens by Janet Fox – I love period books and this one is in the 1920’s. A gangster, secrets, a little romance thrown in for good measure and I was sold!

The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay – I kept hearing about this story for a while, and knew I had to buy it. Hopefully I can read it before the end of summer this year.

Avoiding Responsibility by K.A. Linde – ‘Avoiding Responsibility’ was an insane emotional roller-coaster ride that I absolutely loved. Why I have not read the sequel to it, I do not know. I think I just have not been in the mood for a book that I know will mess with my emotions like this one. I need to read it soon though.

The Madman’s Curse by Megan Shepherd – This one sounded very intriguing, I knew I had to read it. At least I thought I did…

The Painted Girls by Cathy Marie Buchanan – Historical fiction has always been one of my first loves and the synopsis of this book instantly caught my eye. I have been meaning to read this one for a while now.

Bloomsbury Triple Threat Blog Tour: Hysteria by Megan Miranda

Synopsis:
Mallory killed her boyfriend, Brian. She can't remember the details of that night but everyone knows it was self-defense, so she isn't charged. But Mallory still feels Brian's presence in her life. Is it all in her head? Or is it something more? In desperate need of a fresh start, Mallory is sent to Monroe, a fancy prep school where no one knows her . . . or anything about her past. But the feeling follows her, as do her secrets. Then, one of her new classmates turns up dead. As suspicion falls on Mallory, she must find a way to remember the details of both deadly nights so she can prove her innocence-to herself and others.

In another riveting tale of life and death, Megan Miranda's masterful storytelling brings readers along for a ride to the edge of sanity and back again.

***************************************************

Mallory ends up killing her boyfriend in self-defense, but she cannot remember how things lead up to that incident or why she would go so far as to kill him.

“I knew how I was supposed to feel when I was with him. Well, I knew what I was not supposed to feel. I wasn't supposed to feel anxious. Not tense, either. Or maybe I was. Maybe this was normal. I didn't know. So I let him whisper in my ear and put his hands on my hips. And I listened to him list the ways in which I was slowly killing him.

None of which turned out to be the actual way that I killed him.”

-Megan Miranda, Hysteria

So she gets shipped off to a private school called Monroe and tries to forge as normal of a life there as she can. Things however do not stay normal because she constantly feels a presence following her everywhere. And soon Mallory’s roommate is killed using the same Mallory’s knife, so naturally everyone thinks she did it.

I did think it was strange that her parents sent her to a boarding school away from home. I kept wondering why they did not try and get her help, like a therapist or something.

Hysteria was a quick absorbing read that I easily got into. The flashbacks that were scattered throughout the story were a nice glimpse into the night she was with her boyfriend.
It was a good mystery that had me questioning everything and everyone, to see if I could figure things out myself. The ending I definitely did not see coming and when I think about it, I am still questioning the true motive behind it all.

On Dublin Street by Samantha Young

Jocelyn Butler has been hiding from her past for years. But all her secrets are about to be laid bare… Four years ago, Jocelyn left her tragic past behind in the States and started over in Scotland, burying her grief, ignoring her demons, and forging ahead without attachments. Her solitary life is working well—until she moves into a new apartment on Dublin Street where she meets a man who shakes her carefully guarded world to its core. Braden Carmichael is used to getting what he wants, and he’s determined to get Jocelyn into his bed. Knowing how skittish she is about entering a relationship, Braden proposes an arrangement that will satisfy their intense attraction without any strings attached. But after an intrigued Jocelyn accepts, she realizes that Braden won’t be satisfied with just mind-blowing passion. The stubborn Scotsman is intent on truly knowing her… down to the very soul.

**********************************************

From their first meeting in a cab, there was just something about Jocelyn that had Braden intrigued.
He has been hurt in the past, and it is hard for him to completely trust the person he is with. But when he is with Jocelyn, he lets her in little by little. Revealing more of himself in the process. Jocelyn has major issues herself. She never wants anyone to get too close to her. She tries to shut herself out from caring about people too much. This is why she believes their friends with ‘benefits’ relationship will work perfectly. No messing emotions to deal with. Easier said than done…

To me it seemed like he wanted to have a real relationship with her from the beginning. But because she did not, he was willing to make a deal they both would be happy with. He was a little sneaky in his attempts to ‘date’ her and get to know more about her life, which I thought was cute.
Of course it does not take very long for Jocelyn to realize that she actually cares for Braden; a fact that scares her. And she begins to question if it really is better to keep people at a distance.

What I liked:

I loved Braden. I think he is going on my book boyfriends list because I liked him so much. He is a great alpha hero. He speaks his mind, is determined, and very sexy….

Final thoughts:

I don’t know why I waited so long to read this book. Seriously. I bought it when practically everyone I knew was raving about it, and it just set there on my virtual shelf collecting dust. Finally I was in the mood for a little romance and On Dublin Street did not disappoint. It had just the right amount of drama, angst, and steamy romance to keep me turning pages. I loved it.

Strands of Bronze and Gold by Jane Nickerson

The Bluebeard fairy tale retold. . . .

When seventeen-year-old Sophia Petheram’s beloved father dies, she receives an unexpected letter. An invitation—on fine ivory paper, in bold black handwriting—from the mysterious Monsieur Bernard de Cressac, her godfather. With no money and fewer options, Sophie accepts, leaving her humble childhood home for the astonishingly lavish Wyndriven Abbey, in the heart of Mississippi.

Sophie has always longed for a comfortable life, and she finds herself both attracted to and shocked by the charm and easy manners of her overgenerous guardian. But as she begins to piece together the mystery of his past, it’s as if, thread by thread, a silken net is tightening around her. And as she gathers stories and catches whispers of his former wives—all with hair as red as her own—in the forgotten corners of the abbey, Sophie knows she’s trapped in the passion and danger of de Cressac’s intoxicating world.

Glowing strands of romance, mystery, and suspense are woven into this breathtaking debut—a thrilling retelling of the “Bluebeard” fairy tale.

************************************************

I have to admit that I went into this story not knowing very much about the fairy tale of Bluebeard. Except that he was a mean, creepy, and a pirate. Who doesn’t love pirates? I was sold.

After the death of Sophie’s father, she receives a letter from her ‘godfather’ Bernard de Cressac; requesting that she come and live with him at his home. I was a little surprised that since Sophie had other siblings, he only requested her.

She was too enamored with him and all of the gifts and trinkets she was given by him.

There were times where I wanted to tell Sophie to get the heck out of there and run as far as her legs would take her.

When she does try to leave however, her efforts appear futile. And de Cressac creates even more boundaries for her. All too quickly her seemingly wonderful home starts to feel more and more like a prison.

What I liked:

Bernard de Cressac was such an interesting character. He could be sweet and charming one moment, then angry and evil the next. He is a fun villain to read about.

What I did not:

I thought that there could have been more suspense and the pacing of the story was a little too slow for me. It seemed to take a while for something really attention grabbing to happen.

Final thoughts:

Strands of Bronze and Gold is an intriguing story with a nice Gothic feel to it. Even though it was slow going at first for me, the story was in no way boring. It was a fun and delightfully creepy tale. Fans of dark historical fiction stories /fairy tales might be interested in this one.
