A Dance with Darkness by Courtney Allison Moulton

There were shadows in this alley that no light touched, and where there was no light, anything could hide.

At the end of the fourteenth century, angelic reapers struggle to defend London against a legion of the demonic who have their sights set on claiming human souls and ancient relics for a dark purpose. Madeleine, a young but powerful warrior, is duty-bound to fight the demonic, and she lives for this pursuit above all else. Then, on a routine night of tracking, she is ambushed by a cadre of reapers and, though she defeats them all, she is left wounded and at the mercy of their lord, the notorious Bastian.

Madeleine is astonished when Bastian lets her live. She goes deeper into the world of the demonic and is shocked to meet him again-this powerful reaper whose touch makes her restless and gives her a thrill unlike anything else. When they fall into a dangerous clandestine affair, her head and her heart must wage their war: can their love overcome his demonic nature? Will her dance with darkness burn her or bring Bastian into the light?

With scorching romance and fantastic action, this original novella is a prequel to Courtney Allison Moulton's gripping and epic Angelfire series.

**************************************************************

This novella is a prequel to the Angelfire series.

A Dance with Darkness tells the story of a forbidden love affair between Bastian, an extremely powerful demonic reaper and Madeleine, a very skilled angelic reaper. Cadan and Nathaniel also make an appearance in this story as well. Bastian and Madeleine are the parents of Will, whose story begins in Angelfire.

Bastian and Madeleine’s love happens pretty rapidly. When they are together they feel things for each other that despite their obvious differences makes it hard for them to deny.

This story is a prime example of how opposites really do attract and how affairs of the heart can lead them down a thrilling yet dangerous road.

I enjoyed Courtney Moulton’s writing. The world and the characters she creates are awesome. Even though it was short, it was still entertaining and easy to get into.

Pretty Little Liars (Pretty Little Liars, #1) by Sara Shepard

Three years ago, Alison disappeared after a slumber party, not to be seen since. Her friends at the elite Pennsylvania school mourned her, but they also breathed secret sighs of relief. Each of them guarded a secret that only Alison had known. Now they have other dirty little secrets, secrets that could sink them in their gossip-hungry world. When each of them begins receiving anonymous emails and text messages, panic sets in. Are they being betrayed by someone in their circle? Worse yet: Is Alison back? A strong launch for a suspenseful series.

********************************************************

Aria, Emily, Hanna, and Spencer are not your average teenager girls. Drugs, alcohol, cheating, and secret student-teacher interactions are just some of the things that these girls are involved with. They all became connected through their best friend, Allison. Alison went missing one night after a slumber party and hasn’t been seen since.

Several years later, the girls are each living separate lives and are no longer close like they once were. But one by one they start receiving anonymous texts from someone called “A”. Some texts state things no one else, but Alison would know. Which begs the question is Alison still out there alive and watching them? Or is someone else with a twisted sense humor taunting them?

What I liked:
Each chapter is dedicated to a different girl, which helped to keep track of everyone. It took a bit to get used to that, but once I did, I liked it. Aria and Spencer are my favorite characters so far.  Spencer is a bit of an over-achiever, and just happens to want something she should not have…her sister’s boyfriend.
After going to a bar one day Aria meets Ezra, a cute guy who shares some of the same interests as she does. After they part ways, the last place she thinks she will see him again is at her school. Surprise! She finds out he is her new teacher. Things start to become a little complicated for Aria and Spencer rather quickly. I loved it.

What I did not:
For me the only downfall to this book is that I have to keep reading the other books to find out what actually happen to Alison. But that is what makes it fun. J

Final thoughts:
Pretty Little Liars, was a fun and easy read. All the drama, lies, secrets, and backstabbing made for highly entertaining times. I discovered this book thanks to the television show, and both are now my guilty pleasure; one that I happily enjoy. Pretty Little Liars is a book series, which at the moment goes up to book number 13. This book series proves just how deadly keeping secrets can be…

Turn To Me by Tiffany A. Snow

When Kathleen Turner, office runner for the prestigious Indianapolis law firm of Kirk & Trent, started dating the boss she knew the risks. Senior Partner Blane Kirk is known for being a notorious player - the Baskin Robbins of dating with a different flavor every month. Kathleen is the happiest she’s been in a long time, especially as Christmas approaches, but she’s always known there was a termination date on her relationship with Blane.

She just didn't expect that termination to be her funeral.

A festive afternoon of Christmas tree shopping turns life-threatening when Kathleen and Blane become targets for an unknown gunman. They make it home alive, but Kathleen realizes her boyfriend has been keeping secrets. The deadly kind.

Blane’s current case is drawing heated debate and stirring the pot of public fury. Kathleen is horrified by the threats – and worse – being directed at him. A former Navy SEAL stands accused of the wrongful death of an American citizen during a military operation overseas. The case has far-reaching political and military implications. Someone with a lot of money, and even more clout, wants Blane to lose.

As dead bodies of people connected to the defense start piling up, it becomes painfully obvious that disappearing witnesses and altered testimony are no longer enough for whoever is intent on guaranteeing the SEAL gets convicted. Kathleen and Kade, Blane’s brother and ex-FBI-agent-turned-assassin-for-hire, are on the trail of the killer.

Unfortunately for Kathleen, he’s already moved for the end-game – by painting a target on her...and pulling the trigger.

*******************************************

There is nothing like getting into the Christmas spirit by going Christmas tree shopping with your gorgeous lawyer boyfriend when it is snowing all around. That is until someone starts shooting at the two of you and you are ducking for cover. That's what happens to Kathleen Turner when her and Blane Kirk are out one day looking for a tree. It's then that Kathleen finds out that Blane's life as well as her own is in danger thanks to a major case that Blane is on that could end up making or breaking his political aspirations.
Never one to just sit on the sidelines, Kathleen is determined to possibly risk her life in order to find out the truth. Surrounded by people who lie as easily as they breathe makes things difficult for Kathleen when she is trying to discover who is telling the truth and who is out to hurt her.

What I liked:

Even though Kathleen ends up getting rescued more time that I care to count, she doesn't always need to be rescued by someone which is nice. She knows how to fend for herself in sticky situations…for the most part. And she is smarter than the men around her give her credit for.

What I did not like:

The fact that Kathleen has attacked, shot at, and basically put in harm’s way more times than I can count, she still hasn't learned to be cautious. There was one occasion when I was wondering why she would go anywhere by herself after everything that has happened and why would Kade be okay with it as well. That annoyed me a little bit.

Final thoughts:

This was one romantic suspense story that I easily got into. Between this book and the first book, I would have to say that I liked Turn to Me the best. There was never a dull moment. Something was always going on. And there was more of Kade in this book, which I loved. My only complaint is that I have to wait until February 19, 2013 for the release of Tiffany A. Snow’s third book in the Kathleen Turner series, “Turning Point”. I hope these next few weeks go by very quickly…

Spotlight & Sneak Peek: The Archived by Victoria Schwab

Imagine a place where the dead rest on shelves like books.

Each body has a story to tell, a life seen in pictures that only Librarians can read. The dead are called Histories, and the vast realm in which they rest is the Archive.

Da first brought Mackenzie Bishop here four years ago, when she was twelve years old, frightened but determined to prove herself. Now Da is dead, and Mac has grown into what he once was, a ruthless Keeper, tasked with stopping often-violent Histories from waking up and getting out. Because of her job, she lies to the people she loves, and she knows fear for what it is: a useful tool for staying alive.

Being a Keeper isn't just dangerous-it's a constant reminder of those Mac has lost. Da's death was hard enough, but now her little brother is gone too. Mac starts to wonder about the boundary between living and dying, sleeping and waking. In the Archive, the dead must never be disturbed. And yet, someone is deliberately altering Histories, erasing essential chapters. Unless Mac can piece together what remains, the Archive itself might crumble and fall.

In this haunting, richly imagined novel, Victoria Schwab reveals the thin lines between past and present, love and pain, trust and deceit, unbearable loss and hard-won redemption.

******************************************

Victoria Schwab creates a dark imaginative world filled with enough intrigue to hold my attention.

After Da, Mackenzie’s grandfather passes away; she is now responsible for the Histories in the Archive. The Archive is the place where the dead are kept, like creepy and unusual books in a library.

Thanks to this sneak peek from Disney Hyperion, I was able to read the first few chapters of this book. I really enjoyed it. I am excited to read the full book. For fans of the Supernatural, Dystopia, Fantasy, The Archived appears to have all of these elements and more.

The Archived releases today in Hardcover. The E-book version releases on Tuesday, January 29, 2013.

Shadow Woman by Linda Howard

Lizette Henry wakes up one morning and makes a terrifying discovery: She doesn’t recognize the face she sees in the mirror. She remembers what she looks like, but her reflection is someone else’s. To add to the shock, two years seem to have disappeared from her life. Someone has gone to great and inexplicable lengths to keep those missing years hidden forever. But the past always finds a way to return.

Strange memories soon begin to surface and, along with them, some unusual skills and talents that Lizette hasn’t a clue about acquiring. Sensing that she’s being monitored, Lizette suddenly knows how to search for bugs in her house and tracking devices in her car. What’s more, she can elude surveillance—like a trained agent.

Enter a mysterious and seductive stranger named Xavier, who claims he wants to help—but who triggers disturbing images of an unspeakable crime of which Lizette may or may not be the perpetrator. With memories returning, she suddenly becomes a target of anonymous assassins. On the run with nowhere to hide, Lizette has no choice but to rely on Xavier, a strong and magnetic man she doesn’t trust, with a powerful attraction she cannot resist. As murky waters become clear, Lizette confronts a conspiracy that is treacherous and far-reaching and a truth that, once revealed, may silence her and Xavier once and for all.

**************************************

“Turning back to the mirror, she fought through confusion and terror, studying this new person as though she were an adversary rather than …rather than what? Or, who? This didn’t make sense. Her breathing came in swift, shallow gulps, the sound distant and panicked. What the hell was going on? She didn’t have amnesia. She knew who she was, where she was, remembered her childhood, her friend Diana and her other coworkers, what clothes were in her closet and what she’d planned to wear today. She remembered what she’d had for dinner the night before. She remembered everything, it seemed— except that face. It wasn’t hers.”
-Linda Howard, Shadow Woman: A Novel

What would you do if you did not recognize the person looking back at you in the mirror? One morning Lizette Henry wakes up, takes a shower, and is ready to start her day when she looks into the mirror and does not know the face of the woman staring back at her.
Lizette attempts to figure out the missing pieces of the puzzle. But it is hard because there are two years of her life that are missing from her memory. With the help of Xavier, her ex, she starts to remember some things from her past.  But why and how did Lizette loose her memory in the first place?

What I liked:
Lizette is a tough, determined, and smart woman. It is not easy to get her to back down, and she is willing to do whatever she must in order to find out the truth. Even though Xavier in a relationship with Lizzy at the time, he was still supportive and protective of her. He was willing to help her no matter what. Once Lizzy and Xavier finally came together, it was nice to see how well they worked and interacted with each other. I wasn’t completely sold on their “strong” love connection, but it was nice to see Lizzy and Xavier happy together.

What I didn’t like:
Once Xavier enters the picture, she first thinks that he is out to hurt her, but she quickly starts to remember their past and trusts him completely. (Perhaps a little too quickly for me)  It was a little disappointing that Lizzy and Xavier did not spend very much time together in the story. I wish I could have experienced their journey of falling in love.  The story was told with mostly Lizzy’s POV with Xavier’s POV showing up occasionally along with some other characters to take note of.

Final thoughts:
I have not read any other books from Linda Howard, so I cannot compare this with her earlier works, but Shadow Woman was a book that was easy to read and fun to watch as the events with Lizzy unfolded.
There was a good amount of suspense, twists and turns that I liked. I had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next.

Spotlight & Sneak Peek: Cinders & Sapphires by Leila Rasheed

One house, two worlds...

Rose Cliffe has never met a young lady like her new mistress. Clever, rich, and beautiful, Ada Averley treats Rose as an equal. And Rose could use a friend. Especially now that she, at barely sixteen, has risen to the position of ladies’ maid. Rose knows she should be grateful to have a place at a house like Somerton. Still, she can’t help but wonder what her life might have been had she been born a lady, like Ada.

For the first time in a decade, the Averleys have returned to Somerton, their majestic ancestral estate. But terrible scandal has followed Ada’s beloved father all the way from India. Now Ada finds herself torn between her own happiness and her family’s honor. Only she has the power to restore the Averley name—but it would mean giving up her one true love . . . someone she could never persuade her father to accept.

Sumptuous and enticing, the first novel in the At Somerton series introduces two worlds, utterly different yet entangled, where ruthless ambition, forbidden attraction, and unspoken dreams are hidden behind dutiful smiles and glittering jewels. All those secrets are waiting . . . at Somerton.

**************************************

I was able to get a sneak peak of Cinders & Sapphires thanks to Disney-Hyperion. It was a thirteen chapter preview, so my shot review is based on that and not the complete book.

It was a little hard to remember and keep track of the different characters introduced in the story at beginning. But once I got over that minor bit of confusion, the story was pretty easy to get into.

With the wedding between Lord Westlake and Fiona Templeton suddenly approaching soon after the Averley’s arrive home from India, things become very hectic in the household.  Changes are occurring for everyone including sister Georgiana and Ada, who now have step-siblings to contend with.

The lives of the servants like Annie, Rose, and Rose’s mother are shown as they help prepare Somerton for the Averley’s arrival and the wedding.
So far the characters seem pretty likable and the story was a fun quick paced read.

It’s like a cross between Gossip Girl and Downtown Abbey or Upstairs/Downstairs. If you are a fan of historical fiction filled with secrets, scandal, lies, drama, and of course romance then check out Cinder & Sapphires when it releases Tuesday, January 22, 2013!

A Great And Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray

A Victorian boarding school story, a Gothic mansion mystery, a gossipy romp about a clique of girlfriends, and a dark other-worldly fantasy--jumble them all together and you have this complicated and unusual first novel.
Sixteen-year-old Gemma has had an unconventional upbringing in India, until the day she foresees her mother's death in a black, swirling vision that turns out to be true. Sent back to England, she is enrolled at Spence, a girls' academy with a mysterious burned-out East Wing. There Gemma is snubbed by powerful Felicity, beautiful Pippa, and even her own dumpy roommate Ann, until she blackmails herself and Ann into the treacherous clique. Gemma is distressed to find that she has been followed from India by Kartik, a beautiful young man who warns her to fight off the visions. Nevertheless, they continue, and one night she is led by a child-spirit to find a diary that reveals the secrets of a mystical Order. The clique soon finds a way to accompany Gemma to the other-world realms of her visions "for a bit of fun" and to taste the power they will never have as Victorian wives, but they discover that the delights of the realms are overwhelmed by a menace they cannot control. Gemma is left with the knowledge that her role as the link between worlds leaves her with a mission to seek out the "others" and rebuild the Order. A Great and Terrible Beauty is an impressive first book in what should prove to be a fascinating trilogy.
*****************************************
A Great & Terrible Beauty is an older book, but it is one that will forever stay on my all-time favorite shelf.  On my first time doing the Top Ten Tuesday Meme back in November, I mentioned that this was one of the books I was of the books that I was thankful for. The cover is what first caught my eye when I was browsing in the bookstore. It is gorgeous! It’s prefect for the younger group of young adults. Though I am still able to enjoy this book years after I first read it.

Gemma Doyle is in India with her parents, when suddenly her mother dies. Still grieving over the loss of her mother, her father decides to move them to London. There Gemma is sent to a finishing school, Spence Academy. She has a hard time fitting in with the other girls at Spence and finds life there not very appealing. Her father has taken her mother’s death extremely hard, and finds it hard to cope with daily life without the help of laudanum. Her older brother’s attempt to help falls a little short because he just seems to be interested in ‘appearances’ and behaving how society dictates.
Things start to change for her however when discovers the diary of a former student of Spence. It is then that Gemma and her friends try to unravel the mystery of The Realm.

A Great & Terrible Beauty is an entertaining read filled with magic, spells, the occasional school-girl drama, and a mysterious hot guy. All within a Victorian/Gothic setting. If the supernatural mixed with a good dose of historical fiction is what you have been looking for then I would recommend this book easily.

AToMR Blog Tour & Giveaway: Back to You by Priscilla Glenn

“I always knew I would fall in love with you,” he said softly, “but you were never supposed to love me back.”
-Priscilla Glenn, Back to You

When Lauren Monroe first laid eyes on Michael Delaney back in high school, she had every reason to stay away from him; within minutes of their first encounter, his volatile actions confirmed his notorious reputation. But Lauren saw something in him that caused her to question his bad-boy persona, and against her better judgment, she took a chance. She had no way of knowing that the unlikely friendship they formed would become so important to her.

Or that it would end so painfully.

Eight years later, when Lauren begins her new job at Learn and Grow Day Care, Michael is the last person she expects to see. Refusing to revisit the hurt and confusion of their past, Lauren vows to keep her distance from him. But staying away from Michael proves to be more difficult than she thought, despite her lingering grief and her instincts for self-preservation.

As Lauren and Michael recall the friendship that changed them forever and the events that tore them apart, will they finally be able to heal? Or will the ghosts of Michael’s past prove to be too much to overcome?

*************************************

Lauren and Michael became friends in high school. Michael was the ‘bad boy’ in high school. Life was not made easy for him, he had a difficult childhood. I felt for Michael. Growing up the way he did…getting blamed for things that were not his fault. I wished someone would have stopped and showered him with some hugs and lots of love.  Lauren was considered the good girl who was taken with him.

She was able to see in Michael what others did not. She saw past his ‘attitude’ and issues, and realized that there was something good underneath. He needed love and the right person to show him that he was worthy of receiving it.

Their friendship seemed like an odd match to their friends, but that did not stop them from continuing it. But one day that the special friendship that Lauren and Michael share ends badly and abruptly.

Eight years later, they come back into each other’s lives. Even though they have not seen in each in so long, there is still a connection between them.

Showcasing POV’s from both Lauren and Michael, the story flips from past to present as the reader sees what happened to make them loose touch for 8 years and how that has affected their life in the present. I thought that the dual POV’s was a nice bonus. I always like to read what the other main character in a story is thinking versus just the one.

Their emotional and drama filled journey made for an engaging read, that I enjoyed.  Even though I was cheering for Michael and Lauren to make it, I still felt like Michael could have tried harder when it came to him letting Lauren know how he felt. Apart from that I liked the writing. I became invested in these characters and how their story was going to play out.
